Héng Shān (Henan)
At the foot of the mountain is the largest temple in Southern China, the Grand Temple of Mount Heng. Taoism is one of the three religions that co-exist in this temple. There are eight temples of Taoism, eight temples of Buddhism, and Imperial Library Tower represent the convergence of the three religions.
Héng Shān has a connection with Taoism and Buddhism that cannot really be described. Taoist scholars live on the mountain, writing books and thinking up theories of their own. It is especially sacred to Taoists compared to the other religions that co-exist there with them, because Taoism was introduced to this mountain 200 years before the other religions. Many important temples exist on the mountain, and, because there are temples there, the Taoists regard the area around as holy and sacred. They chose this area because it already was sacred, so building temples there turned it into a religious hot spot.
