Héng Shān (Shanxi)
Mount Héng Shān (Shanxi) has been known as a sacred mountain since the time of the Zhou Dynasty. Due to its location in the north, the mountain has made it impossible for pilgrimages by the Chinese to take place for much of its history. Because of this it is not as religiously important as the other sacred Taoist mountains.
During the Han Dynasty, a temple called the Shrine of the Northern Peak was built on Héng Shān's slopes. It was dedicated to the mountain god.
Legend has it that 4,000 years ago, when King Shun visited the mountain and saw the lofty peaks, he named it the "Northern Sacred Mountain." During the Qin Dynasty, Shihuang named 12 famous mountains, and Héng Shān was regarded as the "Second Mountain in the World." IN ancient times, many emporers and celebrities visited the mountain and left many stone inscriptions of poems.
